15 year anniversary
oh, and there also this:
today, 5/27/2005 is the 15 year anniversary of an election called by a Burmese military dictatorship that had ruled the country for 30 years. The junta were arrogant enough to believe that their party would still hold a majority of the seats in the elected parliament after the results were counted. They were shocked to learn that Aung San Suu Kyi and the National League for Democracy (NLD) won 392 of the 485 seats. Most of the remaining seats were won by other progressive democratic parties. Unsurprisingly, this parliament never convened as the generals refused to accept the results.
